This month we give extra focus to those who came before us to pave the way for African Americans in our country! In my class we have chosen not to focus on slavery and enslaved persons, because out of the entire timeline of black history, that is a small minuscule part - and should be covered in our social studies unit but not used to cover all of black history. African American history in the United States is rich and deep and profound and has changed our country in so many ways! It spans so much deeper than Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks - though we should never forget the impacts they have had on our country.

In our reading unit, we are using a biography about Jackie Robinson to focus on the standards of analyzing author's opinion and evidence. We are reading Promises to Keep by his daughter Sharon Robinson.

In addition to this, each student has been researching a different African American in US history that has contributed so much to our history and society. Here are a few posters that have been on our door to remind us how important it is to give credit to all the people who have made such a difference in this country despite hardships, racism, or barriers that stood in their ways.
