In Social Studies, we are learning about the history of the United States - from the indigenous Native Americans all the way until the Civil War. The Civil Rights for the African American slaves tie in really well to our Human Rights writing unit. We read a story called "Which Way to Freedom?" learning all about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman being an important conductor.

At the end of the story we watched a video about Harriet Tubman and students were given a choice to create a timeline about the Underground Railroad and the slaves' journeys to freedom OR draw a biographical portrait of an important character like Harriet Tubman, William Lloyd Garrison, or President Abraham Lincoln. They had many criteria to follow and did a great job working so hard! This was the first project we had in a while and it was a nice break from all the reading!
